Age Spots on Face?
DIY or Professional Help
Age spots on face, sometimes also referred to as liver spots, are pigment collections caused by spending too much time in the sun without adequate sun protection from shade or sunscreen.
People over age 50 year of age, or those who have spent a lifetime in the sun, are usually the ones who get the ugly brown spots appearing first. On occasion, age spots on the face can be the result of bruising that leaves blood pigments in the skin.
Sun-exposed areas like the face, back, arms, feet, and shoulders are the most common areas where these dark brown spots will present. People who are in the sun often and for extended periods of time will also get age spots on their shoulders, back, chest and many other areas of skin even though they were wearing clothing.
Skin Pigment at the Skin Surface
Melanin are lentigines that are superficial collections of skin pigment which have accumulated in the top layer of our skin, technically called the epidermis.
Lentigines usually appear in older people and can occur in all skin types. People who sunburn easily and have a lighter skin types will sometimes get ephelides.
Ephelides is a genetic trait and is used to describe a freckle that is flat, light brown or red, and fades in the winter.
Sun is the Enemy
Age spots on a person’s face usually appear in older people that have spent a lot of time in the sun. Prolonged and repeated exposure to the sun without protection will cause age spots to appear prematurely.
Freckles and lentigines can be minimized by protecting your skin from the sun with top rated waterproof sunscreen or wide brimmed hat.
Age Spots and Freckles are Different
Age spots will appear when there is a build up of pigment in the skin near the surface. When melanin pigments react to the sunlight on fair-skinned people freckles are the usual outcome.
Other contributors to developing age spots on your face can be things like a lack of exercise, poor diet, eating rancid fats, and a sluggish liver function.
Our DIY Solution
If you are a do-it-yourself type, purchase some food-grade hydrogen peroxide from a health food store. It is usually sold in 35% strength, which is way too strong to apply to your skin. To reduce the strength of the agent cut it down with distilled water by adding 1-ounce of peroxide to 11-ounces of distilled water. This will yield 12-ounces of solution containing approximately 3% peroxide.
Apply your home made age spot remover using a cotton swab once a day directly to the age spot. You could buy the solution ready mixed at your local drug store but it will very likely have other unneeded ingredients. Some of these added chemical are stabilizers that can be toxins to your skin.
I have personally used this age spot home remedy and recommended it to many of my clients with good results.
